What is a HEIC file?
A HEIC file is a HEIF container holding an image compressed with the HEVC codec. iPhones and iPads have produced them by default since iOS 11 in 2017, because the format stores good quality in roughly half the space of JPEG.
Is HEIC the same as HEIF?
HEIF is the container format; HEIC is the HEVC-based variant Apple uses. The two extensions convert identically, and converters accept both.
Is HEIC better than JPG?
For storage efficiency and features, yes — around half the file size at similar visible quality, plus support for multiple images and depth data. For compatibility, JPG wins: it opens essentially everywhere.
Why can't my computer open HEIC photos?
macOS opens HEIC natively. Windows needs the free HEIF Image Extensions package from the Microsoft Store, and desktop Chrome, Firefox and Edge cannot display HEIC at all — which is why browser converters exist. See the Windows 11 guide.
Converting
How do I convert HEIC to JPG?
Choose a method for your device: on a Mac, Preview → File → Export → JPEG; on Windows 11, the browser converter or the Photos app with the HEIF extension; on an iPhone, the converter in Safari. Or use the HEIC Glide converter on any device.
Can I convert several photos at once?
Yes. The browser converter accepts multiple files, Finder Quick Actions and sips handle batches on a Mac, and PowerToys Image Resizer does the same on Windows.
Does converting delete or change my original photo?
No. Every method creates a new JPG and leaves the HEIC file untouched. Deleting the originals is always a separate, deliberate step.
Can I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
Yes: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. It affects new photos only — existing HEIC files stay HEIC. Details in why iPhone photos are HEIC.
Is there a way to convert inside the Photos app?
Not with a dedicated button. On a Mac, Photos can export JPEG through File → Export → Export Photos. On iPhone, use the browser converter or a Shortcut.
Quality, metadata and file size
Does converting to JPG reduce quality?
JPEG is lossy, so a small amount of detail is discarded. At a quality setting of 90–95 the loss is not visible in normal photos. The bigger risks are converting a screenshot instead of the original, and re-saving the same JPG repeatedly.
Why is the JPG larger than the HEIC file?
HEIC compresses more efficiently at the same visual quality, so a high-quality JPG often takes two to three times the storage. That is normal.
Are the date, camera details and location kept?
Usually yes with desktop tools such as Preview, Photos and sips, which carry EXIF data across. Browser converters and messaging apps often strip it, so verify one file if metadata matters.
Why does the converted photo look washed out?
The colour profile was dropped during conversion. iPhone photos are typically Display P3; without a profile, software assumes sRGB and the colours shift. Re-convert with a tool that preserves the profile.
Should I convert to PNG instead?
Only for screenshots, text, graphics or images needing transparency. For photographs, PNG files would be several times larger with no visible quality advantage.
What happens to Live Photos and Portrait mode?
A JPG export keeps the still image but loses the motion and the depth map, so background blur can no longer be re-adjusted. Keep the original HEIC for those features.
Privacy
Are my photos uploaded when I convert them online?
With the HEIC Glide converter, the files are processed inside your browser rather than uploaded to a server for conversion. That said, for personal or sensitive photos you should still use a trusted device with an updated browser, and prefer offline tools such as Preview or sips if you want no network involvement at all.
Is converting HEIC to JPG free?
The browser converter on this site is free and needs no account. macOS and Windows also include free built-in options, so paying for HEIC software is rarely necessary.
